SHORT ANSWER

On Myntra, an RTO (return to origin) or RTV (return to vendor) rarely appears as one charge. It usually reverses the sale value, may reverse or retain commission and fees, and can add a reverse logistics or handling fee, often in a later payout cycle. Match each returned order to its original sale and recompute fees using your seller agreement.

What RTO and RTV mean in Myntra settlements

Both terms describe stock coming back to you, but for different reasons. The reason decides what gets reversed or charged in your payout.

  • RTO (return to origin): the shipment did not reach the customer, for example because of refused delivery, an undeliverable address or failed attempts, and it travels back to the seller.
  • RTV (return to vendor): Myntra sends stock back to you, typically when a returned item is not accepted back into sellable inventory or is otherwise sent back. Confirm how your agreement and the seller panel define it.

Customer-initiated returns are often grouped with these in everyday conversation, but they can carry different fees. Track all three as separate categories.

How RTO and RTV show up in your payout

Your settlement will not show a single line called "RTO charge". A returned order typically touches several places:

  • Reversal of the sale value that was settled earlier.
  • Reversal, partial reversal or retention of commission and other fees, depending on your terms.
  • A reverse logistics or return-handling fee, if your agreement provides for one.
  • Tax-related adjustments on the fees, which your tax adviser can help you interpret.

The original sale and its return often settle in different cycles. A payout can therefore look unusually low in one period without any error, because the deduction belongs to a sale paid earlier. Column names vary between reports, so always join the settlement report and returns report on order ID or item ID instead of relying on labels.

Charges to check against your agreement

Do not assume any rate. Fees differ by category, brand terms and time. Use the table below as a checklist, and confirm the latest terms in your signed agreement, current rate card and seller panel notices.

Step-by-step: reconcile an RTO or RTV order

  1. Download the settlement and returns reports for the period and the previous one or two cycles.
  2. Tag each returned order as RTO, RTV or customer return using its status.
  3. Find the original sale line and note the cycle in which it was paid.
  4. Find the reversal lines and confirm the sale value was reversed once, not twice.
  5. Recompute commission and fees from your agreed terms and compare them with what was applied.
  6. Check that the physical stock received back matches the quantity and condition recorded.
  7. Log every difference with order ID, amount, cycle and evidence.

This is manageable in spreadsheets at low volumes. At scale, it becomes the part of the month that nobody has time for.

Common mismatches in RTO and RTV settlement

  • Commission not reversed on an RTO where your terms say it should be.
  • Wrong category of fee, such as a customer-return fee applied to an undelivered RTO.
  • RTV stock not received by you, yet deducted or marked as returned.
  • Double deduction of the same order across two cycles.
  • Partial returns in multi-item orders where the reversal does not match the returned item.
  • Timing gaps where the return is recorded but the adjustment is not yet visible.

MarketplaceMetrics by Fundle is built to catch these patterns by reconciling sales and settlements, checking fees against agreed terms and tracking returns. Myntra Excel reports are reviewed; other marketplaces are in scope discussion.

Raising a recovery case with evidence

A claim is stronger when it is specific. Prepare the following before you write to your Myntra account contact or use the seller support channel:

  • Order ID, item ID and settlement cycle references.
  • The amount charged, the amount you calculate as correct, and the difference.
  • The agreement clause or rate card entry you are relying on.
  • Proof such as delivery status, warehouse receipt records, photos or quality-check notes.

Check the dispute window in your agreement and raise cases early. Keep a log of case status, so open recoveries do not disappear between months. A recovery tracker, whether in a sheet or inside MarketplaceMetrics, should show what is raised, what is accepted and what is pending.

Worked example

Illustrative example only. All figures are assumed for explanation and are not Myntra rates.

LineCycleAmount (₹, illustrative)
Sale value settledCycle 1+1,500
Commission and fees chargedCycle 1-330
Net paid for the orderCycle 11,170
Sale value reversed on RTOCycle 2-1,500
Commission and fees reversed (if your terms allow)Cycle 2+330
Reverse logistics fee (assumed)Cycle 2-90
Net effect of the return in Cycle 2Cycle 2-1,260

Over both cycles, the order nets to -₹90, which is just the assumed return fee. If the ₹330 reversal is missing and your terms say it should be there, the shortfall is ₹330 and the order becomes a recovery case.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between RTO and RTV on Myntra?

RTO means the shipment did not reach the customer and returns to the seller, for example after refusal or failed delivery. RTV means Myntra sends stock back to the vendor, often after a return is not accepted into inventory. Confirm exact definitions in your seller agreement and panel.

Why is my Myntra payout lower after returns?

The return reverses sale value that was paid in an earlier cycle, and may add return-related fees. The deduction lands in a later payout than the sale. Match the settlement and returns reports by order ID to see which lines caused the drop.

Does Myntra refund commission on RTO orders?

It depends on your seller agreement and current rate card, so do not assume. Check the commission and fee lines for the returned order in the settlement report, and compare them with your contract terms. Raise a case if a reversal is due but missing.

How long do I have to dispute an RTO or RTV deduction?

The dispute window is set by your agreement and Myntra's current seller policies, so we cannot state a fixed period. Check those documents or ask your account manager, and raise differences soon after each settlement, with order-level evidence.
